In ministry at McKenzie Towne Church (MTC) we want to be intentional with what we do. We want to invest in quality initiatives that make a difference and have Kingdom impact. We want to choose where we invest so that with each thing we take on we can make sure that we will do it to the best of our ability and fully engage.
Around November 2014, as a staff we began to revision how we wanted to approach our Coffee Ministry. Up until this point we had purchased our coffee through a local roasting company, who also rented us the equipment. We were considering switching out some of the equipment we were using, and while thinking through that process we began to consider other alternatives. What if we could begin serving coffee that not only tasted good, but also had a positive impact in the world? We thought about fair trade, but wanted it to go further than that. We wanted to purchase coffee for our coffee station that would have Kingdom impact.
We began researching different organizations who were selling “missional” coffee. We investigated the areas in the world where these organizations partnered with local farmers, sussed out the values and priorities of each organization, compared prices, and reviewed what each company had to offer.
It quickly became clear that Good Coffee embodied its core values through and through, and that it was very much aligned with our values as a church and as a ministry. The coffee itself was delicious and we felt a strong connection to the work that Good Coffee was doing in Burundi, and their holistic and sustainable approach. We were also thrilled to find out that Good Coffee was a Canadian company and the roasting was done in Canada.
Since partnering with Good Coffee, our coffee ministry has funded the purchase of 4 raincoats for coffee scouts. We are thrilled to be working with this organization and excited to see how our partnership continues to develop.
