In 1 Samuel 17:28 , David's brother, Eliab, overheard David asking about Goliath. Eliab got angry hearing this and accused David of pride.

David snapped back that, "It was only a question!" (v.29 NRSVUE).

This question proved to be more than a simple question, rather the catalyst for his battle with Goliath (v.31, 37, 48). David's persistence in asking the question to multiple people can demonstrate both the desire for additional information and thoughtful consideration.

When God presents a calling or opportunity, asking questions to gain knowledge can give God an opportunity to speak further, as long as we aren't using those questions as an excuse or occasion to allow fear in.

David didn't let Eliab's or king Saul's doubts derail him. David pointed to specific examples where God had shown up in the past (v.34-37). David then reiterated hir confidence in God's power to bring victory when he faced Goliath (v.45-47). Reminding ourselves of past examples of God's faithfulness can help us maintain our confidence as we face our own battles in the wilderness.

Reflection

If you could ask God one question, what would it be?

Prayer

One true living God, Give us a spirit of curiosity to know more about who you are and who you have created us to be. Grant us confidence in knowing that you have overcome the enemy, you are powerful, and you are good. Help us to seek your will and calling in our lives, then to step courageously into where you are calling us. Teach us the best questions to ask as we pursue you and what you have for us. Thank you for your presence. In the name of our Triune living God, the Creator, the Sanctifier, and the Redeemer. Amen.
